Imagine two

\nplanted by unseen

one in the
\npalace garden
\nof a storybook
\nprincess,<\/p>\n

one in a
\ncracked pot
\non the crooked
\nsteps of a
\nmaidservant\u2019s
\nhovel.<\/p>\n

Each morning
\nthe maidservant,
\nwho loves the
\nprincess,
\nplaces a perfect
\ncrimson blossom
\nbehind the
\nprincess\u2019 ear.<\/p>\n

Each morning
\nthe maidservant\u2019s
\nbarefoot daughter,
\nwho loves her,
\nplaces a perfect
\ncrimson blossom
\nbehind her
\nmother\u2019s ear.<\/p>\n

Some of us
\nanxiously puzzle
\nwhether we\u2019re
\nmore like
\nthe princess or
\nthe maidservant.<\/p>\n

I like conjuring
\nthe lesson of
\nthe perfect
\ncrimson blossoms,
\nand recalling that
\na wise woman
\nsaid
\n\u201ca rose is
\na rose is
\na rose.\u201d<\/p>\n
